Sunlight Rock—Climb High and Look Far, Reflecting on the Past and Present
Commonly known as "Yanzi Mountain" and also called "Huangyan," it is the highest peak on Gulangyu Island, with an elevation of 92.7 meters. Legend has it that in 1641, Zheng Chenggong came to Huangyan and, seeing that the scenery here surpassed Japan’s Nikko Mountain, he split the character "Huang" and named it "Sunlight Rock," a name that has been used ever since.
From the summit, you can overlook the entire island, with red tiles and green trees, and the scattered international-style buildings all in view.
Looking into the distance at Xiamen, the modern high-rise buildings sharply contrast with the historical style of Gulangyu.
Sunlight Rock Attractions:
Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall (free, located on the left after entering Xilin Gate): situated at the foot of Sunlight Rock
Longtoushan Fort Ruins: the site of the camp where Zheng Chenggong once stationed troops and trained; the stone fortress gate still remains
Shuicaotai Ruins: said to be the place where Zheng Chenggong commanded naval exercises
Historical Cliff Inscriptions: the stone walls along the way are carved with inscriptions and poems from famous figures of various historical periods; the most famous include "Heavenly Wind and Sea Waves," "Gulang Cave Heaven," and "First of Lujiang"
Sunlight Rock Temple: a delicate temple cleverly built using natural caves, unique in style
Qinyuan Garden: (not visited) located diagonally opposite Xilin Gate
Tour Route:
It is recommended to enter from Xilin Gate (important). It takes less than ten minutes to reach the summit. The peak limits 30 people, so arriving early can avoid peak times. Descend towards Sunlight Rock Temple, where there is a relatively steep staircase (with handrails, narrow enough for only one person at a time). Follow the stone steps down, passing Longtoushan Fort, the Ancient Summer Resort Cave, and other attractions. Along the way, you can also enjoy the cliff inscriptions, finally reaching the Sunlight Rock Temple exit.
Previously, entering from the main gate (Sunlight Rock Temple) requires climbing stairs continuously, resting along the way, and takes more than half an hour to reach the summit. Especially for elderly people wanting to reach the top, do not enter from the main gate. Many elderly visitors are already exhausted and gasping halfway up.
Tour Time: About 2 hours for a leisurely visit. If you have plenty of time, you can bring snacks and sit anywhere to listen to the wind (please take your trash with you).
Clothing: Non-slip comfortable flat shoes, sun hat (better for windy conditions), sunglasses
