Stumbling upon Fu Cheng Men in Xiangxi’s Phoenix Ancient Town gave me an unexpected jolt—my mind instantly flashed back to Beijing’s “阜成门,” a name forever etched in the memories of corporate warriors. Different characters, same pronunciation, same trauma—one from work stress, the other from travel irony. As for Phoenix Ancient Town itself, it didn’t quite live up to my already modest expectations. With Miao costume rental shops taking over half the streets and modern nightlife drowning out its literary charm, it felt more commercial than cultural. Still, the potential is there—perhaps one day it’ll balance its beauty, history, and soul.
