During my hike up Lion's Head Mountain, I unexpectedly encountered the blooming season of Rhododendron Kochii—a delightful surprise! This unique Taiwanese species of rhododendron stands out with its vibrant red blossoms, resembling a striking splash of color amidst the forest. Rhododendron Kochii is an evergreen shrub that can grow up to three to four meters tall, with branches covered in fine golden hairs, which is how it got its name.
Although Rhododendron Kochii can bloom year-round across Taiwan, its flowering season in the northern region is mostly concentrated in spring. I was fortunate to witness it this time. The densely blooming flowers added even more charm to the already scenic Lion's Head Mountain. What started as a simple hiking trip turned into an unforgettable experience of enjoying the beauty of the flower season—truly worth seeing!
