Three years after the coup, my impressions from visiting Yangon

Myanmar's largest city, where history and culture intersect. Even now, three years after the coup, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs still has a Level 2 travel advisory. However, I did not experience any danger during my stay. A unique atmosphere of tension and calm.
Cash payment is the norm. Credit cards are almost not accepted. ATMs often do not accept foreign-issued cards. You need to bring US dollars and exchange them for local currency. Cash in your wallet is a source of security.
Internet restrictions. X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram cannot be accessed as is. A VPN connection is required. An environment where you need to take an extra step to access information.
The mysterious makeup seen on the women's faces. A traditional makeup method using wood powder called "Thanaka". It functions as skin care and sunscreen. You will be surprised at first sight, but gradually it will blend into the cityscape.
The beauty of the cityscape in the evening. The golden glow of the Shwedagon Pagoda. The color of the sky changes as the sun sets. A scene that soothes your tired heart. A series of moments that make you want to take a photo.
Greasy Myanmar curry. Exquisite with a prominent aroma of spices. A mysterious taste that doesn't feel heavy despite its appearance. A representative local food that captures your stomach.
Low prices. Water is 20 yen, Coke is 40 yen. Meals and transportation costs are a fraction of those in Japan. You can enjoy yourself to the fullest even on a small budget. A foreign life that is easy on the wallet.
Language barrier. Burmese is impossible for amateurs to decipher. You have to rely on translation apps and simple English. All the signs and menus around town are in Burmese. The kindness of the local people is a relief.
Yangon is a city that is both dangerous and attractive. Despite the chaos following the coup, its charm has not faded. It is a special place that makes you want to experience the atmosphere while not forgetting to be careful about safety.
