Etiquette You Must Know When Visiting a Korean Temple
Traditional Korean temples are sacred spaces where monks practice. Even for tourism purposes, it is important to observe basic etiquette.
1. Clothing
Clean clothing is recommended. Avoid sleeveless shirts and short pants.
You may have to take off your shoes when entering, so it is better to wear comfortable shoes.
2. Quiet Attitude
Since temples are places for meditation and prayer, please refrain from making loud noises.
3. Taking Pictures
Taking pictures inside the main hall is often prohibited. Ask permission when taking pictures of people.
4. Greeting a monk
When you see a monk, it is good to greet them by putting your hands together and slightly bowing your head.
5. Temple Etiquette
Do not step on the threshold and enter quietly. When sitting, be careful not to point your feet toward the Buddha. 6. Temple food
It is polite not to leave any food (temple food) behind. Please only give as much as you need.
7. Temple stay
You must respect the set schedule and rules, and you can experience Buddhist culture such as meditation and worship.
