The Dongting Lake under Yueyang Tower is the remains of the Yunmeng Lake in ancient times. Its lake surface is very wide, and there has been a saying since ancient times that "800 miles of Dongting Lake". Although its area is now half the size of before, it is still the second largest freshwater lake in the country, with the water and sky merging into one. Dongting Lake is composed of four larger lakes, namely East, West, South Dongting Lake and Datong Lake. It presents a landscape of water swamps, river network and plains. It is surrounded by mountains on the east, south and west sides and has an open horseshoe-shaped basin in the north. The lakeside scenery is beautiful.
