As a history buff, I was captivated by Zhouzhuang. It's truly a living museum, and the architecture tells a story of a prosperous past. The well-preserved houses of the Shen and Zhang families offer a fantastic look into the lives of wealthy merchants from centuries past. Walking through the narrow alleyways and into the private courtyards, you can almost hear the echoes of history. The intricate wood carvings on the doors and windows, the traditional furniture, and the carefully maintained gardens all speak to a different era of wealth and culture. I highly recommend taking one of the hand-paddled boat rides. While it may seem a bit touristy, it's an excellent way to see the town from the water and appreciate its unique layout, which was strategically designed to facilitate trade. The town's historical significance as a water transportation hub is palpable in every corner.
