Introducing Huaxilou

Huaxilou, located in the northern gate of Bozhou City, was built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty for theatrical performances . Originally a stage for the Great Emperor Temple, it earned its name due to its dazzling carvings and paintings. The theater faces south and north, with the stage projecting forward, forming a convex shape with square corners and a glazed roof, creating a magnificent display.

The exterior of the lintel is inlaid with large openwork wood carvings, depicting eighteen acts from the Three Kingdoms period. The characters, carriages, and scenery of the first act are meticulously crafted, creating a sense of realism. Other carvings, including flowers and exotic animals, are exquisitely detailed. This demonstrates the exquisite beauty and unique style of the Huaxi Tower, a representative work of the golden age, and holds significant value for the study of the development of Chinese drama and the essence of Chinese sculpture.

On either side of the main hall are small courtyards with deep paths. To the west was the Zen Hall, and to the east was the God of Wealth Hall (now abandoned). Flanking the theater were the bell and drum towers. One bell still exists, but the drum has been lost. The bell bears the reign of the second year of the Kangxi reign. Outside the bell tower are three buildings, housing merchants from Shanxi and Shaanxi. Thus, the Grand Guandi Temple served as a combination of entertainment (theater), religious services (emperor temple), and commercial purposes (guild hall).
