Houyan Island, located at the southern tip of Pingtan Island, is just 68 nautical miles ( 126 kilometers) from the Nanliao Fishing Port in Hsinchu, Taiwan . Throughout Houyan Island, rocks are everywhere. Yet, no two rocks are alike; each has its own unique characteristics.
A 3- meter-high and 5- meter-wide stone tablet marking the closest point between the mainland and Taiwan Island was built on Houyan Mountain in Pingtan. Inscribed on it are large vermilion characters that read " The closest distance between the mainland and Taiwan Island is 68 nautical miles, China · Pingtan " , and a map of the locations of both sides of the Taiwan Strait is also engraved.
