Xiamei Ancient Residences, located 12 kilometers southeast of Wuyishan City and under the jurisdiction of Wuyi Town, boasts a long history, a rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant cultural scene. Ancient residences in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties line the 900 -meter-long Dangxi River. Ancient streets, wells, docks, buildings, residences, and markets, combined with the simple customs and traditions of the people, create a quintessential southern water village experience.
In the early Qing Dynasty, the four Zou brothers of Xiamei, with a million-dollar fortune, became the wealthiest in the area. They embarked on a massive construction project, building over 70 mansions . Around this time, families with the surnames Fang, Yue, Cheng, and Chen also built mansions and ancestral halls in Xiamei, forming a unique and substantial architectural complex.
These buildings, built along Dangxi River, include mansions of wealthy merchants, palaces of officials, villas of hermits, and residences of Confucian scholars. Their primary function was to provide accommodation, supplemented by facilities for education, gatherings, leisure, and entertainment. To this day, the area still retains a relatively complete Ming and Qing style, recreating the historical facts of the prosperous economic development during the Kangxi and Qianlong eras.
