Longchang Temple is located on Baohua Mountain in Baohua Town, Jurong City, adjacent to Nanjing's Qixia District. Baohua Mountain, named for the yellow blossoms that blanket the mountain in midsummer, is surrounded by 36 peaks resembling 36 lotus petals, with Longchang Temple nestled within them like a lotus.

Longchang Temple, also known as Baohua Temple, was founded in 502 AD and boasts a history of over 1,400 years. Originally, the Liang Dynasty monk Baozhi built a temple here to preach Buddhist scriptures, hence the name Baozhi Gong Temple. Baozhi is the prototype of the monk Jigong in folklore.

Emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty bestowed upon the temple the title "Longchang Temple for the Protection of the Nation and Sagely Transformation." Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty visited Longchang Temple on Baohua Mountain several times, demonstrating its status and influence within the Buddhist community. With misty mountains, gurgling streams, and evergreen pines and cypresses year-round, Longchang Temple is truly an extraordinary Buddhist destination.

Uniquely, its gate faces north-east, making it both small and secluded. This was originally designed to welcome the emperor, prompting the change in orientation. The gate's small size reflects the strict Vinaya monastic disciplines, which limited monks' casual entry and exit, and served as a welcome shelter from worldly distractions. The area is suitable for travel in all seasons.
