The Erlongshan Reservoir is located northwest of Shangzhou City, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province, on the upper reaches of the Danjiang River, 4 kilometers from downtown Shangluo. It serves as a centralized drinking water source protection area for Shangluo City and a water source conservation area for the South-to-North Water Diversion Project's Middle Route. The reservoir's dam is 63.7 meters high, with a total storage capacity of 80 million cubic meters and a maximum water surface of 5,490 mu (approximately 1,677 acres). The average water area is 3,420 mu (approximately 1,677 acres). The reservoir controls a 965 square kilometer (approximately 1,000 square kilometers) upper Danjiang River basin. Since its completion in 1973, the reservoir has provided significant social and economic benefits in flood control, power generation, irrigation, and urban flood control and aquaculture.
Because Erlongshan Reservoir is located on the historically renowned "Xian'e Creek," the reservoir area is also known as Xian'e Lake. The lake boasts scenic spots such as the Xian'e Cliff, the lake's island, and the Guandi Temple. As early as the Tang Dynasty, numerous literati, including Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bai Juyi, journeyed thousands of miles to this area to recite poetry, sail, and explore the area. Since then, the area has become a tourist destination in the ancient capital of Chang'an.
At the confluence of the two rivers lies an isolated island, approximately 20 mu (approximately 16 acres), planted with peach trees. In the lush spring months, warblers fly, grass grows, and thousands of trees blossom, bathing the creek in vibrant colors. Four surrounding mountain ranges resemble giant dragons, drawing water toward the central island. The mountains and water complement each other, their reflections standing tall. When the wind blows across the lake, the dragons leap, ready to take flight. The imagery of the former "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl" has transformed into the current "Four Dragons Playing with a Pearl," a scene so captivating it defies description.
