Introducing Meilu

Meilu, located within the Lushan Scenic Area in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, is a renowned cultural landmark unique to Lushan. It showcases a glimpse into the turbulent history of modern China. Meilu once served as Chiang Kai-shek's summer residence and the "Chairman's Headquarters," and was the "beautiful house" where then-First Lady Soong Mei-ling lived.

The history of Meilu is closely tied to the vicissitudes of the century. Once a "forbidden garden," it was enveloped in drifting clouds day and night, a scene both captivating and bewildering. Now, Meilu has revealed its true face, attracting numerous visitors from home and abroad with its unique charm and grace.

Meilu was originally built in 1903 by Lord Lennox of England and transferred to Mrs. Barrie in 1922. Mrs. Barrie and Soong May-ling had a close personal relationship. In the summer of 1933, Mrs. Barrie gave the villa to Chiang Kai-shek and his wife for their residence. In 1934, Mrs. Barrie presented the villa to Soong May-ling as a gift. From then on, Soong May-ling became the villa's sole owner.

Recommended number of days and locations for visiting

Shrouded in greenery, the Meilu Villa is a stone and wood structure with a two-story main building and a one-story annex, covering 455 square meters and a building area of 996 square meters. The entire Meilu garden covers an area of 4,928 square meters, with the building occupying less than one-tenth of this total. This creates a strikingly spacious and clean garden, while the main building appears appropriately proportioned, neither clumsy nor delicate, creating a harmonious beauty.

Climb the long cross-shaped stone steps and step onto the open balcony, entering the elegantly decorated living room with a blend of Chinese and Western styles. There's a cat's-eye green carpet, dark green sofas, and on the walls hang half-length photos of Soong Mei-ling from different periods, as well as photos of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife during their time at Mei-lu.

The second floor housed Chiang Kai-shek's office, reception room, and bedroom. The bedroom's layout was similar to Soong Mei-ling's, but with the addition of a reclining sofa. Diagonally across from the office was the office and bedroom of Chen Bulei, director of the Second Department of the Secretariat and known as the "literary advisor." To the left of the office were a veranda and balcony, both featuring stone pillars and railings, creating a spacious and comfortable atmosphere.

It is recommended to play for about 2 hours.
