The Lushan Villa Complex is located on Guling Mountain in Lushan. In 1895 , British missionary Richard, noticing the cool climate, decided to build villas there as a summer resort. He bribed local officials and gentry to lease Guling for 200 taels of gold, and built the first villa. Since then, prominent businesspeople from 25 countries, including Britain, Germany, the United States, Russia, Italy, Japan, and France, have flocked to the area, competing to build villas there.
Villas of all shapes and sizes sprang up along the hillsides and streams. By 1927 , the number had grown to 887. Christian churches, Catholic churches, hospitals, and schools were also built. This area became a concession for numerous countries , a testament to the clash of Chinese and Western cultures in modern times.
The architectural style of Lushan's modern villa complex has a unique charm. Each villa is a single structure, its layout, form, and style imbued with the local culture of the original owner's nationality, as well as their aesthetic tastes and preferences. The individual villas' shady locations create a natural, unstructured state, yet this very freedom creates an organic, naturally growing relationship with the surrounding environment, creating a seamless and vibrant landscape.
