Fengyandong Village is located in the mountains of Anwang Village, Nanping Town, Guangnan County, Yunnan Province, 15 kilometers from National Highway 323. The village, home to over 300 people from over 60 households, lives in a single cave. The cave is approximately 125 meters wide at its widest point, and about 100 meters deep from the entrance to the bottom. The area is approximately 7,500 square meters, equivalent to about 11 mu (approximately 1.7 acres). The cave entrance is 1,250 meters above sea level, while the bottom is 1,130 meters above sea level, a drop of about 120 meters. There are currently 33 houses within the cave: 17 are single-family dwellings, 10 are shared by two families, five are shared by three families, one is half-home and half-primary school, and one family of seven lives in a single house.
The cave faces east and west, shaded by lush greenery. Its wide, inverted figure-eight-shaped entrance absorbs both natural light and the westerly sun. The houses within the cave can be divided into two types: bamboo-walled houses and rammed-earth houses. Bamboo-walled houses are an older type of dwelling. The earliest bamboo-walled houses, also called "Ya Ya" houses, are simple dwellings constructed with dug holes, buried pillars, horizontal beams, and bamboo fences. Each house is bare, with the floor serving as both a balcony and a roof. Houses are either connected or built independently, scattered across the terrain.
The architectural style is identical to that of the outside world, with walls and pillars, doors and windows, pens for cattle and horses, and kennels for pigs and chickens, ensuring that both humans and animals have their own places. A man-made stone path connects each household. On the left side of the cave, rock peaks rise from the ground, stalactites hang upside down from the ceiling, and on the right, a giant white stalactite pillar towers skyward. A school operates within the cave, offering classes for first and second grades in the same classroom. To date, the village has produced numerous university and technical secondary school graduates, some of whom are currently working in Guangnan County or even the provincial capital, Wenshan.
