Tongchuan Tower (also known as Song Tower and Chongxing Temple Tower) is located in the seat of the Yintai District Government of Tongchuan City (north of the former Tongguan County), backed by Hutou Mountain to the west and facing Qishui River to the east, with an altitude of 882.4 meters.
The Tongchuan Pagoda is located at the foot of Yintai Mountain, northwest of Tongchuan City, Shaanxi Province. Built into the mountainside, its elevated position gives it a majestic presence. While the date of its construction is unknown, the tower's eaves, brackets, and structure suggest it was built during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). It is a brick structure with a hexagonal plan, seven stories, and stands approximately 15 meters tall, each side over 3 meters wide. It features a dense eaves pattern, imitating a wooden structure. The tower is richly carved and beautifully shaped. The top of the tower features an iron stupa, an inverted lotus pedestal, a stupa, a pagoda wheel, and a jewel. A staircase leads to the top, offering panoramic views of the city.
The Tongchuan Pagoda was first built during the Northern Song Dynasty on the site of the former Chongxing Temple. It features a hexagonal, seven-story, wood-like structure with dense eaves and solid brick. It stands approximately 16 meters tall, with each side of the ground floor measuring 2.17 meters. The three-tiered iron finial features a lotus pedestal, a covered bowl, a wheel, and a jewel. The pagoda gate faces south, and the walls are 1.61 meters thick. The eaves on the first, second, third, and fourth floors are double-arched, with stepped eaves and two-tiered imitation wooden rafters. The lower floor is taller, while the second floor has three bays per side. Brick columns are used for hidden columns, topped with brackets, and a flat railing rises above the eaves. Brick horizontal lattice windows frame the sides of each of the three bays, and iron wind chimes originally stood at the corners of the eaves. The pagoda boasts rich carvings, ingenious construction, and a beautiful form, making it a valuable asset for the study of ancient pagoda architecture.
The warm temperate continental monsoon climate makes it suitable for travel in all four seasons.
The Tongchuan Pagoda is one of the most well-preserved and towering ancient pagodas in our province. Its exquisite craftsmanship and unique style are rare in our province, making it a rare architectural treasure. During the Song Dynasty, pagoda construction was a popular tradition in my country, reflecting the prosperous economy and culture of the Song Dynasty. The Tongchuan Pagoda is of great value to the study of ancient Chinese pagoda architecture and the economic and social development of the period.
