The Gudu Longmen Scenic Area is located in Hancheng, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province. Longmen is the throat of the Yellow River. Flanked by mountains on both sides, the Yellow River lies in the middle. Less than 40 meters wide, the river surges through the "gate," a rolling, yellow wave that flows for thousands of miles. Legend has it that this is where Dayu controlled floods, hence the name "Yumen." The phrase "carp leaping over the Dragon Gate" refers to this spot.

The Yellow River flows through this area, breaking through the mountains and flowing eastward for thousands of miles. According to the "Records of Famous Mountains," the Yellow River plunges thousands of feet here, its waves rising and falling like boiling mountains. Cliffs and sheer cliffs line both banks, a feat only Shennong could cross, hence the name "Dragon Gate." Legend has it that Dragon Gate was carved by Dayu to control floods.

In September 1949, with support from the Logistics Department of the First Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the Hancheng Municipal People's Government erected a cable bridge spanning over 100 meters at the Yumen Ferry crossing of the Yellow River. In May 1972, the state built a railway and highway bridge at Yumenkou, spanning 144 meters, transforming a natural barrier into a thoroughfare.
