Looking for info on a specific area

I am considering an Airbnb that is showing in the area of East Waterfront by Altamaha Square. Is this area considered a safe area? My second choice is located by Columbia Square. Our group will be attending a convention at the Savannah convention center and will have a car.. The Westin is completely sold out. We will have some free time to explore Savannah. I’m mainly looking for feedback on these areas. Thank you.

When it comes to choosing areas for your stay in Savannah, both the East Waterfront by Altamaha Square and Columbia Square are generally safe, but there are a few distinctions to be aware of.

East Waterfront by Altamaha Square: This area is located to the east of the historic district, close to the Savannah River. It's more residential and a bit quieter compared to areas like River Street or the historic squares. It's considered safe, but it is a bit further from the main tourist attractions, so you may have to drive or take a longer walk to reach some of the popular spots in the city. If you're okay with a little more peace and quiet, this could be a good option. However, it’s not as close to the convention center or downtown as Columbia Square is.

Columbia Square: This area is located in the heart of the historic district, which is generally considered very safe. It is a short walk to many restaurants, shops, and popular spots like Forsyth Park, River Street, and the Savannah Convention Center. This area is more active, especially with tourists, and offers more immediate access to Savannah's vibrant scene. If you want to be in the center of things with easy access to attractions, Columbia Square is a solid choice. It's also closer to the Savannah Convention Center, which may be more convenient if you're attending a conference there.

  • East Waterfront by Altamaha Square: Quieter, residential area; further from tourist attractions but offers a peaceful stay.
  • Columbia Square: Central location in the historic district; close to restaurants, shops, and the convention center; lively and more tourist-focused.

Parking: Since you’ll have a car, both locations offer some parking options, but it's worth noting that the historic district can have limited parking, and some Airbnb properties may have designated parking spaces, while others may require street parking. Columbia Square, being more central, may have better options for public or hotel parking nearby.

Safety: Both areas are generally safe, though, like any urban area, it’s always a good idea to be mindful of your surroundings. Columbia Square, being a popular tourist area, tends to have more foot traffic and is often considered safer in terms of visibility. The East Waterfront area, while still safe, is a bit quieter and may feel more residential, which can be great for a peaceful stay but might feel isolated at night.

Based on your description and the fact that you're attending a convention, I would recommend Columbia Square for its central location and easy access to the convention center and Savannah's attractions. However, if you prefer a quieter stay and don’t mind being a little further from the action, the East Waterfront area could also be a great choice.
