Traveling with kids - things to avoid?

When googling I have seen some mixed reviews of visiting with kids (ages 5 and 9).

Is there anything you would recceomend? Such as, Should we avoid burbon street all together? Avoid certain areas, avoid walking around after a certain time?

We would be coming in February 16-22. I know there is a parade on the 15th and it's between super bowl and marti gras. So some people were saying there may still be a lot of parties at this time that are inappropriate for kids.
