Stay in Princeville?

Coming to Kauai in late June but have never been to this island. Really love the pictures of Hanalei Bay with the mountains in the background. We have 4 days and plan on seeing as much as we can.

Is Princeville a good place to make base camp or does someone recommend somewhere else?

Great question. Yes — Princeville can be a really good base for a 4-day stay on Kauaʻi, especially if you love the idea of being near Hanalei Bay and surrounded by lush mountain scenery. But there are trade-offs, and whether it's *the best* place depends a lot on what you want to prioritize during your trip. Here’s a detailed breakdown to help you decide, plus some alternatives.

What’s good about staying in Princeville / the North Shore:

  • Scenic beauty & access to Hanalei Bay: From Princeville, you’ll be perfectly positioned to enjoy iconic views of Hanalei Bay and its surrounding mountains.
  • Close to North Shore attractions: You’ll have relatively easy access to North Shore highlights like the Hanalei Valley Lookout, Secret Beach, and Anini Beach.
  • Luxury & vacation-rental options: Princeville is a more upscale, residential-feeling area with condos, vacation homes, and some resort-style lodging.
  • Tranquility: If you want peace, quiet, and nature — not big crowds or nightlife — this is a very good spot.
  • Good base for Kalalau Trail / Nā Pali Coast: If you're planning to explore parts of the Nā Pali Coast (or do some hiking), being on the North Shore makes sense.
  • Pool + family-friendly lodging options: Many condos in Princeville have pools, which can be great downtime for a family after a day of exploring. As one traveler with young kids pointed out, “doing the pool plus the beach almost every day is … perfect.”

Considerations / potential downsides of staying in Princeville:

  • Weather: The North Shore tends to be wetter and greener, especially outside of the driest months.
  • Distance to the South / Waimea Canyon: If you want to do a full loop of the island (or visit Waimea Canyon and the south or west sides), Princeville is more out of the way.
  • Limited nightlife / entertainment: According to travelers, Princeville is quite laid-back — not a lot of bars or evening entertainment.
  • Beach access from some accommodations: Some places in Princeville are perched on cliffs, so beach access may require driving or walking down.
  • Safety issues for some nearby natural sites: For example, Queen’s Bath (a tide pool near Princeville) can be dangerous during high surf and has had rescue incidents.

Alternatives to Princeville:

  • Poʻipū (South Shore): - More resort-style lodging, a lot of beach options, and generally sunnier / drier weather. - Easier access to Waimea Canyon and the west side.
  • Kapaʻa / Wailua (East Shore): - More centrally located on the island, making day trips more balanced (north, south, canyon). - More variety in dining and moderate lodging options.

My take — is Princeville a good base for your 4 days?

Yes — Princeville makes a very good base for a 4-day trip, especially if your priorities are scenic beauty, North Shore exploration, and relaxing in a lush, quiet environment. With 4 days, you’ll have enough time to:

  • Spend a day or two exploring the north (Hanalei, Anini, Secret Beach, etc.)
  • Do a Nā Pali Coast boat tour or a short hike
  • Take another day to drive to the south or canyon, even if it’s a longer drive, to hit some of the island’s other must-sees

If, however, your main goals are *lots of beach time + consistent sunshine + minimizing driving*, you might also strongly consider Poʻipū or splitting your stay (for example: 2 nights north, 2 nights south) to get the best of both worlds. That said, many travelers — even with moderate time — have stayed solely in Princeville and done day trips, and they found it totally manageable.

In summary: Princeville is a great choice, especially for first-time visitors who want that North Shore magic. Just be aware of the trade-offs (weather, driving) and pick accommodations that make sense for how you plan to spend your days. Enjoy your trip — Kauaʻi is stunning, and the North Shore is one of the island’s gems! 🌺
