More affordable lodging?

I’m looking into KW area next year w my son for a couple days. We just want beach and then to get to the ferry to Dry Tortugas. Is a nearby Key a better place to stay? Boca Chica?

If your main priorities are beach access and being able to catch the ferry to Dry Tortugas, there are a few things to consider regarding where to stay in the Key West area and nearby keys.

Key West lodging:

  • Key West itself tends to be expensive, especially for hotels close to the beach or the ferry terminal. Even budget options are often significantly pricier than nearby islands.
  • Staying in Key West gives you walkability to beaches, restaurants, and attractions, but you may pay a premium for convenience.
  • If you only plan to be in Key West for the ferry and a short beach visit, the cost may outweigh the benefit of central location.

Nearby Keys (Boca Chica, Stock Island, Cudjoe Key):

  • Boca Chica Key is about 5–10 minutes from Key West International Airport and 10–15 minutes from downtown Key West. It offers more affordable hotels, motels, and vacation rentals.
  • Boca Chica also has easy access to beaches, although they are smaller and less touristy than Key West’s public beaches.
  • Other nearby options include Stock Island, which is a short drive to Key West and sometimes cheaper, and Cudjoe Key, a bit farther out but offers vacation rentals and a quieter environment.

Considerations:

  • Transportation: Staying outside Key West means you’ll need a car or ride to get to the ferry terminal (around 10–15 min from Boca Chica). Parking at the ferry terminal is available but may have a fee.
  • Beach access: Key West has the most iconic beaches, but Boca Chica and Stock Island have quieter, less crowded options.
  • Overall cost: By staying on a nearby key, you can often save $50–$150 per night, depending on the season.

Summary Recommendation:

For a short stay with a focus on budget and ferry access, Boca Chica Key is a practical and more affordable option. You still have beach access and a short drive to Key West for the Dry Tortugas ferry. If you want more nightlife, restaurants, or sightseeing, then staying in Key West proper might be worth the extra cost.
