Help with itinerary

Husband and I are going to Atlanta for the first time in early June staying at Hyatt Place Downtown. We need to do indoor activities as I have a health condition where I can overheat easily so places like the zoo or Botanical Gardens are out. We will be there on Sat, Sun, and Mon.

Monday we plan to do the Aquarium as it will be less crowded and figure that will take most of the day. Saturday or Sunday we are doing the College Fball Hall of Fame. We arent interested in Coca Cola Museum and saw that Civic Center is closed. So I need 1-2 more indoor places that would be worth taking an Uber or Lyft to, not real far from downtown area. Considering possibly the Comedy bus tour. Thanks for any suggestions.

It sounds like you and your husband have a fun trip planned to Atlanta, and I’m happy to help with more indoor activity suggestions that will keep you cool and entertained. Since you're staying in Downtown Atlanta, you’re in a great location to access some wonderful indoor attractions that are not too far from your hotel. Here's a suggested itinerary for your weekend, including some indoor activities that should work well for your health condition.

1. Georgia Aquarium (Monday) – As you mentioned, the Georgia Aquarium is a fantastic choice for your Monday visit. It’s one of the largest aquariums in the world and will likely take up most of your day. It's fully indoors and air-conditioned, and the exhibits are visually stunning. You'll see everything from sea otters to whale sharks, and there's even a chance to see the dolphins up close. It’s an amazing experience, and you’ll be able to enjoy it comfortably in a climate-controlled environment.

2. College Football Hall of Fame (Saturday or Sunday) – The College Football Hall of Fame is another great pick for your weekend. It's an interactive, indoor museum that features exhibits on college football history, player memorabilia, and exciting immersive experiences like the "Quarterback Challenge." It's a fun and educational stop, perfect for sports fans. It's located in downtown Atlanta, so it will be easy to get to by Uber or Lyft from your hotel.

3. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights – If you’re interested in history and social justice, this museum is a must-visit. Located a short ride from downtown, it is dedicated to the American civil rights movement and human rights struggles worldwide. The museum features powerful exhibits, including a lunch counter where you can experience the historic sit-ins. The building is modern and fully indoors, with climate control to ensure a comfortable visit.

4. The Atlanta History Center – Located a little farther from downtown but still easily accessible by Uber, the Atlanta History Center is a fantastic museum. It offers indoor exhibits on Atlanta’s past, including the Civil War, the 1996 Olympics, and more. The center also has a beautiful indoor exhibit space and a renowned museum shop. Although it's a little further from your hotel, the museum offers a rich experience and would be worth the ride if you're interested in history.

5. Atlanta Botanical Garden (Indoor Exhibits) – Although you mentioned that the Botanical Gardens are not an option due to your health condition, the Atlanta Botanical Garden has indoor exhibits as well. The "Orchid Display" in the Fuqua Conservatory is a beautiful space to explore indoors, with a range of tropical plants and exotic flowers. If you feel up to it, this might offer a nice indoor experience, even though the garden grounds would not be suitable.

6. The Punchline Comedy Club – If you’re considering a Comedy Bus Tour, another great option for entertainment is The Punchline Comedy Club. This is Atlanta’s premier comedy venue and hosts top local and national comedians. It’s a fun way to enjoy an evening indoors with some laughs. Check their schedule to see if they have any performances during your visit that would be a good fit for you.

7. Fernbank Museum of Natural History – While this museum is a little farther from downtown, it's an amazing indoor option if you enjoy science and history. Fernbank features interactive exhibits on dinosaurs, wildlife, and environmental science, plus stunning IMAX films. It's a family-friendly place but has enough to keep adults engaged as well.

Additional Suggestions:

  • SkyView Atlanta – For a unique indoor experience, consider visiting SkyView Atlanta, the giant Ferris wheel in Centennial Olympic Park. It’s fully enclosed and offers great views of the city from the top, which might be a fun, cooler way to see the sights from above.
  • World of Coca-Cola – While you mentioned you’re not interested in this, it’s still worth considering for others who might enjoy a fun and lighthearted indoor experience. It’s a museum dedicated to the history and culture of Coca-Cola, featuring a tasting experience of Coca-Cola products from around the world.
  • The Varsity – If you're looking for a quick indoor food experience, The Varsity is an iconic Atlanta fast-food institution. While it’s not a sit-down dinner, it’s a fun and easy stop for a snack or meal, especially if you want to try classic Atlanta fast food like chili dogs or burgers.

Since you're interested in taking the Comedy Bus Tour, I think you'll find that a fun way to explore the city and hear some humorous commentary on Atlanta’s history. Just be sure to check the schedule and book tickets in advance if possible, as it’s a popular activity.

It looks like you're set for a memorable trip to Atlanta! These indoor activities will help keep you cool while providing plenty to see and do. Enjoy your weekend, and happy early anniversary!
