Three weeks from now I'll be back on Maui and later that week I will be doing an overnight in Hana. I'm not big on banana bread so I was thinking of stoping on my way from Wailea at Komoda Bakery in Makawao at about 7:30am along the way. I was wondering about the Kaupakalua Rd, from Makawao back to the Hana Highway doesn't look too windy on Google maps. Anything I should be aware of? I have driven the road to Hana several times and I don't plan to stop much along the way. Mahalo
The route from Wailea to Hana via Makawao is a scenic and less conventional option compared to the standard Hana Highway approach. Stopping at Komoda Bakery in Makawao around 7:30am is a great idea to get fresh pastries and avoid the main rush along the Hana Highway.
Regarding Kaupakalua Road (also known as Kaupakalua Road / Upper Kula Road segment):
Additional tips for your Hana trip via this route:
Overall, taking the Kaupakalua Rd segment can be a smoother and faster alternative to the most winding parts of the Hana Highway, especially if your plan is to stop minimally. Just exercise usual caution on narrow or one-lane sections, and you should have a comfortable drive.
