Ka'anapali to Makawao drive

Thinking of hiring a car to do a day trip from Ka'anapali to Makawao - how long would this drive take? - are the roads windy? We are Aussie drivers so not used to wrong side of road and Left Hand drive vehicle - thanks

The drive from Ka'anapali to Makawao is a popular day trip on Maui and offers a mix of scenic coastal and upcountry views. The distance is roughly 27–30 miles depending on your route, and the drive typically takes about 50–70 minutes without stops. Keep in mind that traffic in some areas, especially near Lahaina or Paia, can add extra time.

Regarding the roads, most of the route is along well-maintained paved highways, but there are sections, particularly as you ascend into the upcountry areas like Makawao, that are winding and include some steep grades. The main roads to consider are:

  • Honoapiilani Highway (Hwy 30): This is the main highway along the west coast, generally straight and wide, suitable for most drivers.
  • Hana Highway (Hwy 36 via Paia): As you approach Makawao, the roads can become narrower, with sharp turns and some blind corners. However, they are well-maintained and marked.

As Australian drivers, switching to left-hand drive vehicles in the U.S. will take a short adjustment period. A few tips:

  • Take it slow at first, especially on narrow or winding sections.
  • Use your GPS or a navigation app to anticipate turns and lane changes.
  • Remember that passing lanes and road markings are designed for right-hand driving, so always stay on the right side of the road.
  • Be extra cautious on hills and curves; use brakes early rather than late.

The drive is very scenic, with opportunities to stop for coffee in Paia or enjoy the rolling upcountry landscape before arriving in the charming town of Makawao, known for its paniolo (cowboy) history and art galleries. Allocate extra time if you plan to explore the town or take photos along the way.
