Hyatt Regency

Hi all. I booked the Hyatt Regency for my bucket list trip from the U.K. on the recommendation of my travel agent. I know it’s a huge corporate and convention hotel, but when I bought a couple of comprehensive NOLA guide books, the Hyatt Regency didn’t even rate a mention. Have I made a mistake?

The Hyatt Regency in New Orleans is a large, modern hotel located along the Mississippi River in the Central Business District, just a short walk from the French Quarter. While it may not have the historic charm or iconic status of hotels in the French Quarter, staying there is not a mistake—it offers convenience, comfort, and many amenities.

Here are some details to help you set expectations and plan your trip:

  • Location: The Hyatt Regency is about a 10–15 minute walk to the heart of the French Quarter, and you can easily access Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, and the French Market. The Riverwalk and some riverfront dining are practically next door. If you don’t want to walk, streetcars and rideshares are quick options.
  • Amenities: As a corporate/convention hotel, it has modern, spacious rooms, multiple dining options, a rooftop pool, fitness center, and a business center. Service is professional and reliable.
  • Atmosphere: Unlike the boutique or historic hotels in the French Quarter, the Hyatt Regency feels more corporate and modern. It won’t have the same “New Orleans charm” that guidebooks often highlight, which is why it may not be mentioned in every NOLA guide.
  • Pros for your stay: Spacious rooms with river or city views, reliable amenities, easy access to public transport and nearby tourist sites, excellent for families or those who prefer more modern accommodations.
  • Cons for those seeking historic experience: Lacks the boutique, historic, or quirky New Orleans character you’d find at hotels in the French Quarter, like Hotel Monteleone or Royal Sonesta.

Overall, your choice is not a mistake. If your goal is comfort, easy access to tourist sites, and professional service, the Hyatt Regency is a solid pick. If your main priority is staying in a hotel steeped in New Orleans history or within the heart of the French Quarter’s lively atmosphere, some boutique or historic hotels would have offered a more immersive experience.

  • Comfort & convenience: Hyatt Regency
  • Historic French Quarter experience: Hotel Monteleone or Royal Sonesta
  • Modern luxury with accessibility: Omni Royal or Windsor Court (if you decide to switch in future trips)

Since you are visiting for your bucket list trip, you can still enjoy authentic New Orleans experiences by exploring the French Quarter, dining at local restaurants, and visiting jazz clubs—all within a short distance from the hotel.
