If you're looking to visit a historic location in Germany, Aachen Cathedral is a must-see. Registered as the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, this cathedral flourished as the center of the Holy Roman Empire and continues to captivate visitors to this day. Amazingly, despite being a World Heritage Site, admission to the cathedral is free! We'll also share how to access it from Berlin, so be sure to check it out! ☺️
📍 Aachen Cathedral (Aachener Dom)
Location: Domhof 1, 52062 Aachen, Germany
Tickets: Admission to the cathedral is free (Treasury Museum: €6 for adults, €4 for students)
Access 🚃:
From Berlin to Aachen, take the German Rail (ICE) for approximately 5.5 hours. One-way tickets cost around €30–€60.
Highlights of the cathedral include Charlemagne's tomb and the octagonal Palatine Chapel. Surrounded by majestic mosaics and stunning stained glass, you'll feel as if you've traveled back to the Middle Ages. The awe-inspiring atmosphere is so overwhelming that it might leave you speechless 😳
Additionally, during the Christmas season, a Christmas market is held in the nearby square. Even outside the holiday season, you can enjoy strolling through the charming European streets, visiting local shops, and picking up souvenirs from quaint boutiques and candy stores ☺️
The scenery from the train ride between Berlin and Aachen is also worth noting. Since it's a manageable day trip, those staying in Berlin might want to include this destination in their travel plans.
