Located in Aomori City, adjacent to the Sannai-Maruyama archaeological site, the Aomori Museum of Art was designed by architect Jun Aoki. Its minimalist white exterior and labyrinth-like interior spaces leave a lasting impression. The design draws inspiration from the stratified layers of the nearby Jomon archaeological site, blending modern aesthetics with historical resonance.
The museum's collection primarily features artists from or connected to Aomori Prefecture. Among the highlights is Yoshitomo Nara's massive sculpture "Aomori Dog," standing 8.5 meters tall, which is both soothing and awe-inspiring. Additionally, the museum houses Shiko Munakata's woodblock prints, Shuji Terayama's film works, and world-class contemporary art pieces.
🚍 The museum is about a 20-minute bus ride from Aomori Station. Visitors are recommended to allocate at least two hours for exploration. Pairing the visit with a trip to the Sannai-Maruyama site offers a unique opportunity to experience a dialogue between prehistoric culture and contemporary art.
