[Bangkok, Thailand] Wat Pho has plenty to see besides the Reclining Buddha

Wat Pho, one of Bangkok's three major temples

Constructed by King Rama I as a royal temple for monks to study the teachings, it is the oldest temple in Bangkok, dating back to 1788.

It is also said to be the headquarters of Thai traditional massage and Thailand's first university.

Wat Pho is famous for its 46-meter-long, 15-meter-tall Reclining Buddha. Not only is its impressive scale impressive, but the mother-of-pearl inlay on the soles of the Buddha's feet, which represent the Buddhist worldview, is a must-see.

In addition, behind the Reclining Buddha are 108 bowls, one for each earthly desire. It is said that by placing a coin into each one, you can cast away these desires.

However, Wat Pho has plenty to see besides the Reclining Buddha, including the four huge chedis (stupas) that symbolize each of the kings, from Rama I to IV. Their decorations, inlaid with intricate floral tiles, are well worth a visit.

Other attractions include a corridor lined with Buddha statues and the Ayutthaya-style main hall. Inside the main hall is a bronze statue said to have been moved from Thonburi by Rama I, with his ashes said to be enshrined on the pedestal, creating a solemn atmosphere.

Foreigners are required to pay an admission fee to enter the temple, but it is definitely one to visit on any trip to Bangkok.

It's large and has a lot to see, so we recommend allowing yourself plenty of time.
