Portrait without a face

Unprotected: An Exhibition That Removes Faces to Reveal Self More Clearly, by Diego Rodarte

"Unportraited" explores the journey of a Mexican artist who uses painting as a tool to explore "self" in an era where images have become redundant and fragile beyond recognition. His creative approach dares to experiment and challenge the boundaries of traditional painting.

The inspiration for this exhibition stems from questioning the concept of "portraits." Traditionally, the concept of "portraiture" preserves a person's face and identity on canvas. In an era where everyone creates images of themselves through screens, the artist has chosen to "remove" the face from the image instead, using traces of paint, fading stains, and dripping surfaces as a painting language. The artist asks viewers to question whether our identities can still exist without appearances.

"Unportraited" invites us to re-examine ourselves. It explores what we see beneath the erased face and whether we are still “us.” It also calls for us to imagine a self that cannot or refuses to be seen.
