Hymn to the Sea, Carved in Stone, Jeronimos Monastery

#JulyTravelSupport

Elegantly nestled in Lisbon's Belém district, the Jerónimos Monastery is a symbol of the golden age of Portugal's maritime empire. Construction began in 1502 and took nearly 100 years to complete. Built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's successful voyage to India, the monastery also houses his tomb.

The architecture is in Portugal's signature Manueline style, and is characterized by intricate and ornate stonework. The delicate carvings depicting sailing, the sea, plants, and crosses create a beautiful and symbolic detail, earning it the nickname "Sea Story in Stone."
