Magnificent Stone Art: Jerónimos Monastery

Belem is the place in Lisbon, the city of the sea,
where the deepest traces of time remain.
At its center, as if in an epic poem,
stand two symbols side by side —
one is the Monument to the Discoveries, which symbolizes a white sail,
and the other is the Jerónimos Monastery, a huge monastery with Gothic and Renaissance styles.
The monastery, built of white limestone,
is a building that embodies the glory of the Age of Exploration, the golden age of Portugal.
Built in the early 16th century to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India,
this monastery is the pinnacle of the splendid Manueline style.
The elaborately carved stone pillars, pointed arches,
and even the shadows of the sunlit corridors
contain the monks’ quiet life and their longing for the sea.
