Saint Peter and Paul - Smilevo

Nestled in the heart of Pelagonia, about ten kilometers from Demir Hisar, lies the monastery of “Saint Apostles Peter and Paul” in the lush Smilevo forest. Surrounded by ancient woods and stunning mountain views, this spiritual gem offers a serene retreat for prayer and respite from daily life.

The monastery’s history is tied to Smilevo, a village famed for the 1903 Ilinden Uprising, where the Smilevo Congress of IMRO took place. The original church, built in the 19th century, fell into ruin by the mid-20th century after the death of Abbot Peter. Honoring his wishes, locals rebuilt it in 1983-1984 on the old foundations. In 2018, the church was solemnly consecrated, reviving its spiritual legacy.

The architecture is quintessentially Macedonian—a single-nave basilica with stone walls and vibrant frescoes inside. The iconostasis features icons of Saints Peter and Paul, symbols of faith and mission. Peter, the Galilean fisherman, and Paul, once a persecutor of Christians, embody transformation and devotion.

Today, the monastery is active, with monks preserving its traditions. Visitors can attend liturgies, especially on July 12, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, marked by a grand hierarchical liturgy. The surrounding area offers walking trails, and nearby is a museum dedicated to the Ilinden Uprising and a memorial park for Dame Gruev.

Smilevo is more than a historical site; it’s a spiritual wellspring. Amid nature, the “Saint Peter and Paul” monastery reminds us that faith is a root connecting us to the past and hope for the future. Visit, and you’ll leave with peace in your soul.
