If you prefer tranquil architecture harmonized with nature over a trip to a bustling city, I highly recommend Cheongnyangsa Temple located in Bonghwa!
I have a particular fondness for Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, Japan, and I felt that the grand yet serene atmosphere of Bonghwa Cheongnyangsa Temple closely resembles that of Kiyomizu-dera.
Nestled like a lotus flower in the middle of the peaks of Cheongnyangsan Mountain, Cheongnyangsa Temple is surrounded by breathtaking scenery that leaves no room for your eyes to rest.
Although it requires a 40-minute hike from the parking lot to reach the temple, making it no easy feat, it is undoubtedly worth every step!
Personally, I am not a fan of hiking, but this temple made me want to revisit despite that. When you finally arrive, the stunning view of the rocky cliffs and pine forests blending together will leave you in awe.
Cheongnyangsa Temple was founded by the great monk Wonhyo in the 3rd year of King Munmu of Silla (663), boasting a history of over 1,400 years. In the past, it was a large temple complex with as many as 33 subsidiary buildings. Walking along the mountain slopes while listening to the sound of clear valley water gives you a refreshing feeling that reaches your soul!
📍 Location: 199-152 Cheongnyangsan-gil, Myeongho-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongbuk
