Cairo's Khan el-Khalili Souk is one of Egypt's most famous and bustling traditional markets, a must-see for tourists. Stepping into it feels like stepping into an Arabian fairytale. The intricate alleyways of the market are imbued with a rich Middle Eastern atmosphere. Stalls sell a wide variety of goods, including souvenirs, spices, scented oils, painted lamps, handicrafts, handbags, scarves, silver jewelry, clothing, and more. The dazzling array of goods makes it a treasure hunt paradise.
However, shopping here requires some mental preparation. The vendors are enthusiastic, even a bit insistent, constantly shouting their sales pitches at you, some even speaking a few words in Chinese to attract your attention, which can be quite amusing. Their attitudes can range from friendly to aggressive, even a bit overbearing, which can be a bit tiring.
So, remember to bargain hard here. Many items can be bargained down to half the original price or even less. It's recommended to smile, maintain a distance, and politely decline requests when necessary. Even so, Souk el Khalili remains one of the most direct ways to experience Egypt's local culture and hospitality.
