Phanom Rung Historical Park, Buriram Province

Prasat Phanom Rung, located atop Phanom Rung Mountain, an extinct volcano, is located in Tapek Subdistrict, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Buriram Province. It is one of the most beautiful and significant Khmer-style ancient monuments in Thailand.
This religious site was built to honor Shiva, the supreme deity of Hinduism and the Shaivism sect. Phanom Rung and the temple on top of the mountain are considered to be Mount Kailash, Shiva's abode, and also symbolize the center of the universe. The complex of buildings on the mountaintop dates back to various eras, from the 15th to the 18th Buddhist centuries.

The name "Phanom Rung" comes from the Khmer word "Vanamrung," meaning "vast mountain." This word appears in Khmer inscriptions found at Prasat Phanom Rung. The temple's creator, Narendraditya, is also mentioned, a descendant of the Mahidharapura dynasty and a relative of King Suryavarman II, the creator of Angkor Wat.
The Fine Arts Department conserved Phanom Rung Castle by registering it as an ancient site in the Royal Gazette, Volume 52, Section 75, on March 8, 1935. Renovations were carried out between 1971 and 1988. The boundaries of the site, 451 rai and 11 square wah, were announced in the Royal Gazette, Volume 93, Section 141, on November 9, 1976. The Fine Arts Department established the Historical Park Project, which officially opened on May 21, 1988. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony.
Admission is 20 baht. Entry to both castles, including Mueang Tam Castle, is 30 baht. Alternatively, parking is available in the parking lot behind the castle, which is an additional 50 baht.
