Wat Chiang Man, an ancient temple and the first temple in Chiang Mai city, was built by King Mengrai in 1839. It was originally a temple of Queen Chamadevi and King Mengrai.
✨️ Currently, it is a center for the study and dissemination of Buddhism, as well as a place to store important antiques in the history of Chiang Mai. Inside the temple, there are many important places, such as the Elephant Surrounded Chedi, a Lanna-style main chedi built in 1840, the Ho Trai Klang Nam for storing the Tripitaka and various scriptures, and the Royal Wihan or Ubosot, built in the present era. There are gold-painted murals on the red walls, telling the story of the creation of the city and temples in both Wiang Kum Kam and Chiang Mai by King Mengrai.
🛕 The small Wihan or Chaturamuk Wihan is the original Wihan of the temple. It enshrines important Buddha images such as "Phra Setangkamani" or "Phra Kaew Khao" and "Phra Sila Pang Torturing the Elephant Nalakhiri", an Indian art style believed to be very sacred, and the Wat Chiang Man stone inscription. The names of three kings, namely Phraya Mangrai, Phraya Ngam Mueang, and Phraya Ruang or King Ramkhamhaeng, who jointly built Chiang Mai, tell the story of the creation of Chiang Mai and the construction of Wat Chiang Man. It is valuable historical evidence that should be preserved very well.
