Wat Umong - Wat Suan Phuttatham

Wat Umong, built during the reign of King Mangrai around 1297 (approximately 700 years ago), is another ancient temple steeped in Lanna history and culture. Located near the foot of Doi Suthep and just a kilometer from Chiang Mai University, it boasts a remarkable highlight: the tunnel beneath the pagoda.
This ancient tunnel beneath the pagoda at the foot of the Lanna-style pagoda, with its many connecting passages, houses a Buddha image and murals. The cool, airy interior offers visitors a sense of time travel. The temple grounds are lined with mature trees and lush moss, especially beautiful during the rainy and winter seasons. Birds, chickens, and chicks stroll by, and squirrels and turtles feast in the fish pond.

The temple is also a meditation center, offering visitors the opportunity to meditate or listen to sermons. While not as rigorous as Goenka Vipassana, the atmosphere is friendly and peaceful.
