Temples, Trails, and Tastes: 5 Days of Culture in Chiang Mai 🇹🇭

Nestled in the mountains of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is Thailands second biggest city. The city seamlessly blends rich history with a laid-back vibe. After exploring the maze of narrow streets and temples in the Old City, you’ll find easy access to nature - from jungle waterfalls to misty trails. Here are my recommendations for a 5 day stay in Chiang Mai:

1️⃣ Old City Temples
Chiang Mai’s Old City is full of beautiful old temples, each with its own story. You can visit Wat Phra Singh to see its famous Lion Buddha, or check out the crumbling but impressive Wat Chedi Luang, which used to be the tallest building in the ancient city. Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in town, has peaceful courtyards and stone elephants carved into its base. The best way to enjoy them is just to wander around on foot, taking in the quiet atmosphere or by taking a city walking tour by a friendly local.

2️⃣ Markets and Shopping
Chiang Mai’s markets are a feast for the senses, each with its own personality. The Sunday Walking Street fills the Old City with handmade crafts, local snacks, and street performers. Anusarn Market near the Night Bazaar mixes souvenirs, jewelry, and plenty of places to grab dinner. For a more local vibe, Gate Market (near Tha Phae Gate) is packed with fresh produce, street food stalls, and a lively morning crowd. And if you’re a foodie, Chang Phuak Night Market is the place to be after dark—famous for its legendary “cowboy hat lady” khao kha moo (braised pork leg) and other mouthwatering street eats.

3️⃣ Nature Trails
Known as the “Roof of Thailand,” Doi Inthanon is home to the country’s highest peak and some of its most stunning scenery. A day trip here can take you from cool mountain air to lush jungle trails, where you’ll hike past towering trees, hidden waterfalls, and the peaceful sounds of nature. The main route leads you through vibrant green rice fields and small hill-tribe villages, giving you a glimpse of rural life. With its mix of fresh air, breathtaking views, and gentle adventure, it’s the perfect escape from the bustle of the city.

4️⃣ Cooking Experiences
Just outside the city, Thai Farm Cooking School offers a fun, hands-on way to learn the secrets of Thai cuisine. The day starts with a trip to a local market to pick out fresh ingredients, followed by a short drive to the farm surrounded by rice fields and herb gardens. Here, you’ll cook classic dishes like curry, stir-fries, and soups, all from scratch. Finally, you’ll get to enjoy your own delicious food!

🏨 Where to Stay: The Cozytel Chiangmai is a strategically located within the Old City, a stones throw away from the Sunday night market. Rooms are spacious and quiet and the staff are welcoming.

🍚 Where to Eat:
