It's located behind the Wihan Luang.
It is considered the tallest chedi in Lanna.
However, an earthquake
in 2088 CE caused the spire to collapse,
leaving only the large base.

Today, it once housed the
Emerald Buddha (now at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram, Bangkok).
The history is as follows:

● Phra Chedi Luang...
Construction began in 1934 CE
during the reign of Phraya Saen Muang.
Later, during the reign of Phraya Yat Lokaraj,
he ordered its height to be 80 meters.
It has a square base 56 meters wide on each side.
The shape was also modified to resemble
Lha Prasat Loha of Sri Lanka.
The shape of the chedi is Pagan-style.
The four corner arches of the great chedi were modified.
It is surrounded by elephant statues. The Chedi Luang has 28 elephants.

● The construction of the elephant statue symbolizes
the strengthening of the city,
in terms of occultism
and the strengthening of the city.

There is also a ceremony
worshiping the King of Elephants
because it is believed to bring auspiciousness and peace to the country.
