South Korea has three major cathedrals: Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, Jeondong Cathedral in Jeonju, and today's featured scene, Gyesan Cathedral in Daegu.
If you've seen the Korean drama "Kumjeong-gam," the wedding scene between Kim Myeong-sang and Kim Myeong-sang was filmed at Gyesan Cathedral. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited inside, but trust me, step inside, sit on the wooden benches, gaze at the altar and the stained glass windows, and you'll feel a sense of sacredness.
Originally, the church was a wooden Korean-style house, but it was destroyed by fire. In 1898, Father Park Do-hyung, who designed Myeongdong Cathedral, designed and built this cathedral. Finally completed in 1902, it was the third Gothic-style cathedral of the year, following those in Seoul and Pyongyang. Its two towering octagonal spires are a striking landmark, and the stained glass windows are said to have been originally imported from France.
This is also one of the few Korean churches that actually rings bells. The bells ring every morning at 6:00 AM, noon, and 6:00 PM, creating a European-style experience.
