Dead Sea, Jordan

Ever since I read about the Dead Sea, a place so salty it floats, in my middle school textbook, I'd always dreamed of visiting it. In June 2017, I went backpacking alone to Jordan. Unfortunately, my trip to Jordan happened to be during Ramadan, so prices were skyrocketing.

You can get to the Dead Sea from downtown Amman, Jordan, through a travel agency or by chartering a taxi. However, Jordan's prices were incredibly high, so I decided to go my own way. I arrived at the Dead Sea via a city bus and two hitchhikes.

After a series of twists and turns, I finally arrived. Because it was Ramadan, there were no other people around, so I was able to enjoy my time alone in the Jordanian Dead Sea, with views of Israel. A lifeguard(?) on the Dead Sea beach took my must-have photo of me floating in the water reading a book or magazine.

And the Dead Sea water is saltier than other seas, so it really hurts if it touches a wound or gets into your eyes. I was splashing around in the water and got seawater in my eye, and it was so painful. Haha. And no matter how hard I tried to sink, it wouldn't go back in, which was amazing and fun.

I had a truly blissful half-day at the Dead Sea. If you ever visit Jordan or Israel, be sure to visit the Dead Sea! :)
