Chew Jetty is the most representative floating settlement in George Town, Penang, and is also part of the United Nations World Cultural Heritage. It is one of the most complete and popular representatives of the "surname bridges" where early Chinese immigrants in Penang lived together according to their surnames, with a history of more than a hundred years. These wooden stilt houses extend along the coast and are built on the water, reflecting the immigrants' work and life near the docks.
The current Chew Jetty retains its original structure and adds sightseeing elements. Not only can you walk on the wooden boardwalk to feel the sea breeze, but there are also vendors selling ice cream, handicrafts and Nyonya snacks along the way. Some residents still live on the bridge, so please keep quiet and respect local life. In the evening, the sunset falls from the sea level, which is a great time to take pictures and take a walk.
📍Address: Pengkalan Weld, George Town, Penang (about 15 minutes walk from KOMTAR)
🚍Transportation: Take the bus to "Jetty Terminal" station and walk there, or use Grab
🕰️Opening hours: Open all day (recommended to visit during the day or evening)
💰Tickets: Free to visit (some souvenir shops or ice cream are charged separately)
