Nestled at the foot of Baiyun Mountain by Luhu Lake in Haizhu District, the Guangzhou Museum of Art (also known as 广州艺术博物院) reopened a stunning new venue on November 30, 2023. Designed by Herzog & Partners alongside South China University of Technology, its striking “kapok blossom” glass-and-PV façade marks it as both a cultural beacon and architectural marvel .
I arrived mid-morning and spent about 2 hours roaming its five floors (plus one basement). The permanent galleries encompass:
• Gallery of Chinese Painting of All Dynasties: masterworks from Song to Qing, featuring renowned artists like Qi Baishi and Dong Qichang
• Gallery of Lingnan Painting School: spotlights on Lingnan masters—Gao Jianfu, Zhao Shao’ang, Chen Shuren, and more
• Artist-specific halls: dedicated spaces for Gao Jianfu, Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai, Yang Shanshen, Zhao Shao’ang, Lai Shaoqi, Liao Bingxiong, and others
• Additional collections: calligraphy, sculpture, traditional crafts, thangkas, ceramics, and more
Temporary exhibitions showcase international and contemporary art, with state-of-the-art digital halls and interactive installations .

The Guangzhou Museum of Art stands as South China’s cultural flagship—free to enter, academically rich, and visually inspiring. Whether you’re captivated by Lingnan masters, ancient Chinese painting, or contemporary art, its galleries offer both breadth and depth. With its riverside location and bold architecture, it’s a must-visit cultural highlight in Guangzhou—perfectly paired with a stroll along the Luhu lakeside or a visit to nearby Ersha Island and Canton Tower.
