#cherryblossom25 Kabushima Island, a paradise for petrels, a spectacular spot where nature and history interweave
Located at the northernmost tip of the Tanesashi Coast, Kabushima Island is a popular spot designated as a national natural monument as a breeding ground for petrels. Originally a remote island, it was reclaimed in 1942 and is now connected to land.
About 30,000 to 40,000 petrels fly to the island every year from around March, laying eggs in April and giving birth to chicks in June, when the entire island is covered with petrels, creating a powerful scene. The Kabushima Shrine, located at the top of the island, is said to bring good luck in the form of “increased stock.
In mid-May, rape blossoms bloom, creating a beautiful contrast between the red of the torii gate, the blue sky, and the white petrels. There are many places of interest nearby, such as Kabushima Resting Area and Kabushima Promenade Park. It is also the Trail Head & End Point, the northern entrance to the Michinoku Shiokaze Trail.
