Central Asia/Caucasus Region
Near the border between Georgia and Armenia,
Haghpat Monastery is a World Heritage Site located in the Lori region of northern Armenia.
Armenia, the world's oldest state with Christianity as its official religion, is home to numerous Armenian churches and monasteries.
Haghpat is one of the most well-preserved of these.
Its founding is said to date back to the 10th century.
The church's walls are densely carved with reliefs of crosses, and the light filtering through the windows is apparently carefully calculated.
And what's more, even though it's a World Heritage Site, admission is free! There were few tourists, so you could leisurely explore the area.
There were only a few cute souvenir stalls in front of the monastery.
📍Location: Haghpat village, Lori region, Armenia
💰Free admission
🕒Opening hours: Unknown. (Approximately 24 hours, but be aware that there are no lights inside.)
🚗Access: Approximately 40 km from the Georgian border (Bagratashen) - Armenian border (Sadakhlo) crossing, approximately 170 km from the Armenian capital, Yerevan. Joining a local tour or renting a car is convenient.
