Just outside Haikou, the Leiqiong Global Geopark (雷琼火山地质公园) offers a rare chance to step into the remnants of Hainan’s volcanic past. The park’s star is Mount Ma’anling, an extinct volcano with a perfectly preserved crater surrounded by lush tropical forest.
Visitors can hike up the volcano rim trail, peering into the green-filled crater while enjoying panoramic views of the countryside. Along the way, you’ll pass fascinating lava rock formations, underground lava tunnels, and geological displays explaining the island’s fiery origins.
The park is also rich in tropical plants and birds, making it as much a nature reserve as a geological wonder. Shaded walking paths and observation decks make the climb pleasant, even on warmer days.
💡 Tips:
• 📍 About 15 km from downtown Haikou; reachable by taxi or bus.
• ⏳ Allow 2–3 hours to explore the crater, trails, and visitor center.
• 👟 Wear comfortable walking shoes — some paths are uneven lava rock.
• 🌿 Best visited in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures.
