Goryokaku is a must-see on any trip to Hakodate.
It's famous for its cherry blossoms in spring, its greenery in fall, and its snowy landscapes in winter.
However, because of its vast expanse, a summer visit requires considerable preparation.
Many people spend a day at Goryokaku on a two-day, one-night trip.
It's such a short trip that even hotels often recommend a quick route to Hakodate.
I'll include an itinerary that includes some of the more common sights!
1) Hakodate Shio Ramen
Reference Address: 7-23 Honcho, Hakodate, Hokkaido 040-0011
Hakodate is famous for its shio ramen. It's not overly salty, but has a mild, refreshing saltiness that keeps the taste buds pumping. However, the ramen shops around Hakodate Station are difficult to recommend due to their over-tourism and excessive seafood selection (mainly to drive up prices). If you're already there, it's definitely worth trying the seafood rice bowl.
Therefore, I recommend trying shio ramen around Goryokaku Park! While famous spots like Ajisai are certainly good, I also recommend the local shops near your hotel! I loved Ramen Nidaime Hirakiya!
2) Goryokaku Tower
Goryokaku Tower was built to offer a panoramic view of Goryokaku. At 1,200 yen for adults, it's not cheap, and while it's a relatively low observation deck, it's designed to capture the starry landscape of Goryokaku, offering a view unlike any other! It's especially worth mentioning in spring. I'd love to visit!
3) Unique Souvenirs
The souvenir shop at the base of the tower boasts a much wider selection than other tourist spots. Perhaps it was the star-shaped Goryokaku that was particularly impressive. You can also purchase exclusive merchandise featuring Sanrio and other pop-character characters! Don't miss it!
4) Goryokaku Park
Unfortunately, it was too hot to explore much. However, the interior is very spacious, so it was nice to walk around even in the crowded areas, and the various indoor facilities made it a great place to relax! Just avoid the summer!
5) Lucky Clown
Reference Address: 4-18 Honcho, Hakodate, Hokkaido 040-0011/30-14 Goryokakucho, Hakodate, Hokkaido 040-0001
Lucky Clown has locations throughout Hakodate, but the ones near Hakodate Station are always crowded, so it's best to visit the Goryokaku location during off-hours, such as in the morning or a little after lunch. Especially after enjoying the night view of Mount Hakodate, the gates are often closed, so I recommend eating at Goryokaku rather than Hakodate!
6) Tram
When you think of Hokkaido, you can't help but think of the tram. Continue your Hakodate adventure on a variety of trams, from historic ones to modern ones! A morning trip to Goryokaku is enough! Check out other Moment's Hakodate itineraries!
