Review: Higashiyama Station to Yasaka Shrine: A Must-Visit Historic Kyoto Area! 🏯🌸
Address:
Start from Higashiyama Station (東山駅) on the Kyoto Subway Tozai Line, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, Japan 📍 (Exit 2 or 3 and walk straight east) to Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社) at 625 Gion-machi Kitagawa, Higashiyama Ward – approximately 1.5-2 km. Follow Jingu-michi, the main street connecting Higashiyama.
Atmosphere/Location:
The walk from Higashiyama Station to Yasaka Shrine is one of the most beautiful walking routes in Kyoto. 🛤️ Start from the convenient subway station and head up to Jingu-michi Street, lined with antique shops, green tea cafes, and modern Kyoto-style wooden houses. It's like stepping into an Edo-era Japanese drama. 🎎 The walkway is smooth but has a gentle slope (elevation gain of about 85 meters) through the well-preserved Higashiyama District. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk, but many people spend 1-2 hours stopping to take photos and do some shopping. 🌟 During autumn (Nov), the red leaves are stunning, or during cherry blossom season (Apr), Maruyama Park next to the shrine is in full bloom. The atmosphere is romantic but lively. From the latest review in 2025, some people complain that during peak season (10:00-15:00), it's so crowded that walking is slow. And the souvenir shops are 20-30% more expensive 😅 But overall, the route is free, clean, and safe, perfect for walking alone or with your family. If it's raining (a common occurrence in Kyoto), the path can be a bit slippery.
Highlights:
• Yasaka Pagoda (八坂の塔): After a 5-10 minute walk from the station, you'll find a dark blue five-story pagoda that's a popular photo icon. 🗼 Take photos against the narrow Higashiyama-style streets for a truly Kyoto feel. Reviews say the dim lighting is beautiful and romantic at night.
• Sannen-zaka & Ninnen-zaka: Ancient stone pavements (Sannen-zaka 3 years old, Ninnen-zaka 2 years old) lined with shops selling Japanese sweets, dango, and pottery. A leisurely 10-minute walk past a delicious matcha parfait cafe. 😋
• Chion-in Temple (知恩院): A stop on the way (an additional 5-minute walk from the main road). This large Jodo-style Buddhist temple features the tallest Sanmon Gate in Japan. Listen to the bells ring for free! 🔔
• Maruyama Park & Yasaka Shrine: End at Maruyama Park, a popular cherry blossom viewing park. Then, visit Yasaka Shrine, with its red torii gates and hanging lanterns. Pay respects to the goddess of beauty (Utsukushii Gozen-sha) or watch the Gion Festival if you're visiting in July! 🎆
• Near Gion: Walk a bit further to the Gion District, and you might even be lucky enough to spot a geisha (maiko) walking by. This route connects to Kiyomizu-dera for an easy day trip.
Average Price Per Person:
• Transportation: Subway fare to Higashiyama Station: 260 JPY (approximately 60 THB) from Kyoto Station (using an ICOCA card) 🚇
• Snacks/Desserts (Dango, Matcha Ice Cream): 300-600 JPY (approximately 70-140 THB)
• Yasaka Shrine Admission: Free! (Open 24 hours) However, a donation of an Omamori amulet is required: 500-1,000 JPY (approximately 120-230 baht).
• If you stop by Chion-in Temple: 500 JPY (approximately 120 baht)
• Travel from Kyoto Station to Higashiyama: 260 JPY + free walking
Rating:
4.7/5 ⭐
The Higashiyama Station to Yasaka Shrine route is a must-walk for Kyoto lovers who want to experience the old town without getting tired. 🌳 Beautiful views, cute shops, sacred shrines, and plenty of temples to visit. Perfect for a relaxing morning or afternoon trip to enjoy the autumn leaves in 2025 😍 Only one point deducted because it gets crowded during the day and the narrow paths can be slow. 🙈 If you have time, start your walk early to avoid the crowds. But if you're worried about getting tired, try bus 206 directly to Gion instead!
