Hong Kong’s long-established Lee Kum Kee has teamed up with Italian gelato shop Messina for a collaboration, using two Chinese sauces—Chaozhou chili oil and premium soy sauce—to make gelato. Yesterday, I tried the premium soy sauce flavor!
The shop was as busy as ever. I ordered a mini single scoop to try: tofu pudding flavored gelato base, paired with premium soy sauce brownie and soy sauce mochi. The whole recipe is quite similar to the traditional Hong Kong-style flavors and methods Messina uses.
However, personally, I felt the tofu pudding flavor overpowered the entire gelato, and the two soy sauce-flavored toppings were rather mild, unable to highlight the sweet-salty or savory-salty effects. In contrast, the Chaozhou chili oil gelato I had the day before had more texture and a noticeable salty-spicy flavor 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
💰 Average spending: 55 for a mini single scoop
📍 Address: Near Tai Kwun, Pottinger Street and Stone Slab Street, Central
