Deep Exploration of Tai Kwun, Hong Kong|The Century-Old Stories and Artistic Soul Hidden in the Arsenal

#HongKongDeepTravel
In "Old Central," the magnificent complex of Tai Kwun was once the core area for law enforcement, judiciary, and correctional services in Hong Kong. Today, it has transformed splendidly into a sanctuary that blends heritage with art, earning the highest honor of the 2019 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation through its revitalization project! Here stand 16 conserved and revitalized historic buildings, such as the former Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison, complemented by two modern buildings designed by the internationally renowned architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron—the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre and the Jockey Club Cube—creating a stunning fusion of old and new!

Whether you stroll freely or join a guided tour for an in-depth experience, walking through the meticulously restored historic buildings and spacious courtyards, the story of Hong Kong from the late 19th century to the present gradually unfolds. The most popular site, the former Victoria Prison, once held thousands in its cramped cells. Through carefully restored architecture and interactive exhibits, the strong sense of history hits straight to the heart!

But Tai Kwun’s charm goes far beyond that! Besides exploring heritage, you can encounter a diverse feast of arts—visual art exhibitions, music and theater performances, film screenings, and craft workshops take turns on stage. There are also free lunchtime concerts and exclusive nighttime programs. When you get tired from walking, you can recharge at the many exquisite restaurants inside the complex.

A special mention goes to the Arsenal located beside the mango tree! This building, constructed in 1925, was converted into a Japanese military stable during the occupation period, hence also called the "Stable." In the late 20th century, it became the office for the police traffic department. Today, its two floors have been transformed into unique restaurants. Dining inside this century-old building, with shadows of trees dancing outside the windows, every detail tells a story of the passage of time~
